Into the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft and the Arizona Cardinals added another Offensive Lineman to their roster, following in the footsteps of Dorian Johnson in the 4th, as Vanderbilt Offensive Tackle Will Holden became the latest addition to the roster.
Like Dorian Johnson in the previous round, Holden was a long-time starter in college; starting three years with Vanderbilt and capable of lining up at either side on the offensive line.
He’s a player that impressed on and off the field, being named a four-time member of the SEC Academic Roll of Honour. Smarts and IQ will only get you so far in the NFL though so it’s good to see that, at 6’7” and 311lbs, Holden has the size to be a capable player in the league.
Another player, like 3rd round selection Chad Williams, who impressed in the Senior Bowl, he’s one who has seemingly fallen through no fault of his own with many thinking he’d be a 3rd/4th round selection. Their loss is Arizona’s gain though.
Where will he play in Arizona though? With both Mike Iupati and Jared Veldheer free agents in 2018, there could be 2 glaring holes on the team’s offensive line. Could we see Holden ‘red-shirted’ in 2017 and in 2018 be part of a line that consists; LT – Humphries, LG – Johnson, C – Shipley/Boehm, RG – Boehm/Someone Else, RT – Holden?
